What does an investor look for in a crypto/NFT community?

One of the common questions I get asked is, “what makes a community seem appealing to an early-stage investor?”

It is not an exact science, and often there have to be a few tweaks made to the plan, depending upon the project (it’s not a one-size, fits all), but these are some common threads that run through the majority.

  1. A Twitter account with at least 2000 followers, I run the account via https://twitteraudit.com to calculate the percentage of “fake followers” these can be a combination of bots or what I refer to as “almost dormant” accounts. Once I have this number, I discount them and reassess the project. If the percentage of “fake followers” is over thirty-three, I immediately walk away. I also check for an engagement level per tweet, and ideally, I look for 2.5% and above. Although anything over 0.5%, for me, is acceptable, fake accounts never buy NFTs/Tokens.
  2. A Telegram channel with a minimum of twelve hundred active members; I gauge a vibrant community by quickly thumbing through the last one hundred messages and reading them. I’m looking for actual people with real questions. If the percentage of “GM”, “wen moon”, “wen airdrop” is over ten per cent, I walk away.

On both Twitter and Telegram, I’m looking for relevant engagement, competition entries, project-related memes, fan art, general questions that make sense, weekly project updates from the development team, demonstrating some form of progress towards a fully working product. In addition, I hope to see regular updates and teasers from the community manager and, of course, sales and marketing updates about new partners/clients.

I also investigate poor promotional activity; I expect a project to hire an agency to market their token/NFT. But if they have dropped their Twitter handle into an Indonesian airdrop group, when I can tell from their socials they haven’t planned for an airdrop, I won’t invest. I have seen too many projects fail when they have tried, or their agency has cut corners at an early stage of community building.
