How to Change WhatsApp Phone Number Without Losing Chats

Before you proceed, first ensure the SIM card to the phone number you are switching to is inserted into your phone so as to receive SMS/phone call verification. Once this is done, you can proceed to the next steps.

Launch WhatsApp and go to Settings >> Account and tap Change Number.
A confirmation screen is displayed to confirm if you’re able to receive SMS or phone calls on the new number. Confirm and tap Next.
Now, enter your old and new numbers and tap Next. WhatsApp will ask whether to notify your contacts about the number change. You can set to notify all contacts, contacts you have chat with or custom numbers. However, groups are automatically notified about the change in number.
Next, tap Done and you will be prompted to register your new number. A six-digit code is sent by SMS or a phone call and will be required to complete the process. After completion, your chats are retained and made available on WhatsApp with the new phone number.

Note:

The process required in changing your WhatsApp phone number is different from changing WhatsApp to a new device. You are advised to back up your chats and restore them later once you have switched to your new device.
