Google introduced the Live Caption feature for its Pixel series smartphones back in 2019 with the launch of Google Pixel 4. This feature adds live captions to all audio and video playing on the device. The feature was exclusive to Pixel devices but you can also use it on any device running Android 10. Now, Google has introduced the feature for Google Chrome and it shows live captions for any audio or video played on the browser. Live Captions on Chrome automatically generate real-time captions for any media which has audio. The feature works across social media and video sharing sites, podcasts, personal video libraries like Google Photos, and embedded video players, etc.

The feature currently supports only the English language and is available on the latest version of Chrome on Windows, Mac, and Linux. Here’s how to enable it.

Enable Live Captions on Chrome

To turn on Live Caption in Chrome from your desktop:

1. Go to Chrome Settings by clicking the three dots on the right top corner.

2. Now, click on the Advanced section from the side menu.

3. From there, go to the Accessibility section.

4. Here you will see the “Live Caption” button, enable the toggle next to it.

The Live Caption in Chrome takes some time to download speech recognition files and then it will be enabled.

Use Live Caption in Chrome

Once you enable the feature on your browser, restart Chrome. Now, open and play any video or audio file, and enable this feature by tapping on the music icon near the Extensions icon. When you tap on this icon, a box will appear with the Live Captions.

After enabling it once, you won’t need to follow the same process again to use the feature. Live Captions will then start appearing in a small, moveable box at the bottom when you play any video or audio. Live Captions will also work even when the audio is muted.

Customize Live Captions

You can also customize how captions look on your screen. Follow the above-mentioned steps to go to the Live Captions settings and then:

1. Click on the button next to Caption preferences.

2. A new window will open to customizing the captions.

3. Here you can change the caption color, size, transparency, background, etc by clicking on the respective button.

That’s it. You will be able to use customize captions for any audio or video.
